How many tons of coal from Kentucky are extracted in a year?

In 1999, I would estimate that we will mine around 135 million tons of coal in Kentucky.  In 1990, we produced a record 179.4 million tons of coal---a record.

Coal production in the United States has exceeded one billion tons for the last several years.  The growth in production is coming from a region called the Powder River Basin---essentially the state of Wyoming.
