Coal mining is definitely getting safer.  Along with advances in technology have come advances in mine safety and health standards.  The industry is highly regulated by the National Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the Kentucky Department of Mines and Minerals.  Miners are now skilled technicians who receive extensive training, both general safety training and job-specific training.
